In 1999, when the FDA issued its government good manufacturing practices (GMP)
standards—which regulated that electronic records had to be trustworthy, reliable and readily available for FDA inspection—Haemonetics was using paper forms for recording and tracking customer services, support, and product information. Each completed form was sent to a dispatcher who manually entered the information into a database and then filed the paper report. Leadership at Haemonetics quickly recognized that they were not equipped to meet the new government standards.
